Does my pet swallow something? How to help your pet in the case of constipation?

Constipation means uncommon, hard bowel movement, you may also notice that the animal defecates once only in a few days. This of course also depends on the animal's body and its dietary peculiarities. If feces show once in one or two days, this does not necessarily means a problem, especially if the feces have normal size and the animal do not need a lot of effort during bowel movements. However, if stools does not show in more than two or three days and you pet tries to defecate but the effort does not work, it might be that stools in the intestines are harden, which will require even more effort during bowel movements, it is - a sign of constipation.
Before providing assistance to the animal, it is also important to assess whether he is suffering from other diseases, which can cause constipation, it is often a cause of certain disorders, and constipation is often confused with colitis.

Causes of the Constipation

Generally common constipation occurs in older animals. A common cause is dehydration – animal is not drinking enough of fluids, which result is the hardening of stool in the intestines thus constipation occurs.
Common cause of constipation in dogs is swallowing of the toys, bones or other materials which dogs like to chew. Dogs chew, or ingest particles of wood, paper, grass, clothes, toys - they can cause obstruction of the digestive tract. Long-haired dogs and cats can also be more likely to have constipation due to swallowed hair which appears in the intestines. It is beneficial to give your pet foods containing materials which have hair removal formulas from the intestines, or special supplements which help long haired pets to avoid hairballs in the digestive tract. Non-digestible items ingested particles are mixed with feces which cause hardening of the obstructions in the intestine thus pet owners should remember to prevent their pets from possible causes of constipation.
Another reason, common in dogs is long periods between the walks. The longer the stool stays in the intestines, the more it hardens, so if the dog is taken out after long periods it might lead to the fact that it requires more effort during bowel movements.
The most important thing is to monitor the process of defecation whether it has any discomfort for your pet, as well as whether there are no traces of blood in the stools.

Prevention

Our Veterinarian Surgeon Aurimas Kviklys advises pet owners to be able to distinguish these problems, and what measures to take to prevent them.

The most important thing - always ensure that the animal is drinking enough water. Dog owners who love to pamper their pets, should pay attention to the bones they give to chew, is it not too soft (particularly typical for chicken bones) because the bone splinters clog the intestines, and in some cases it is better to give special treats.
You can also take your pet for longer walks.

Do you often have to treat pets that swallowed bones, toys or other objects, how they relate with constipation?

It's not a very common problem in our practice, it usually occurs in dogs that ingest bones; bone splinters stuck and clog the digestive tract, the intestines. Sometimes the bones of small particles are very difficult to see when they get stuck in the esophagus, near the stomach, it is extremely dangerous, as the sharp bone debris can pierce the trachea. This way blood might enter the lungs and the animal can suffocate.

Constipation is more common for older animals; usually it is a chronic problem, mostly related to the animal's diet, physical activity, and history of other diseases.

Which supplements are suitable to relieve constipation problem?

We recommend special supplements – capsules, paste, enema or specially balanced food.

What signs show the problem and the owner may suspect that the animal swallowed something and should go to the vet?

The animal is vomiting, trying to cough, it is hard for the pet to pass feces, loses a lot of fluids during the vomiting, it becomes weak, sluggish.

What measures in such cases are taken by Veterinarian?

Usually palpation of the abdomen show the large peaces swallowed by the pet. Otherwise, X-rays, which in most cases give an effective diagnosis. However, there are cases where the swallowed objects are not visible. In actual practice, there are cases where the equipment does not show swallowed objects thus we have to perform the surgery and find small parts, bones or other material in the large intestine.
